Lederhosen Sizing Guide: How to Measure Yourself for the Perfect Fit
Returning ill-fitting lederhosen is frustrating, expensive, and often impossible when ordering from international manufacturers. The good news is that lederhosen sizing is straightforward once you understand how leather behaves and which measurements matter most. With a soft tape measure and five minutes, you can order with confidence.
Why Lederhosen Sizing Differs from Regular Pants
Leather stretches. A new pair of lederhosen will feel slightly snug at first, then relax and mold to your body within 3-5 wears. This is intentional — properly fitted lederhosen should feel firm initially so they hold shape over time. If you order them loose enough to feel like cotton trousers from day one, they will become baggy within months.
The Three Measurements You Need
First, measure your waist where you actually wear your belt or pants — not your natural anatomical waist. Pull the tape snug but not tight. Second, measure your hips at their widest point. Third, for kurze (short) lederhosen, measure your thigh circumference at its widest. For kniebund (knee-length) and lange (long), measure your inseam from crotch to desired hem length.
Reading a Lederhosen Size Chart
European lederhosen typically use waist measurements in either centimeters or even-numbered EU sizes (46, 48, 50, etc., where the number is roughly your waist in cm divided by 2 plus 16). US sizing translates roughly: 46 EU = 30 US waist, 48 EU = 32 US, 50 EU = 34 US, and so on. Always cross-reference with the manufacturer’s actual measurements rather than relying only on size labels.
What to Do If You Are Between Sizes
For kurze, size down — they should feel snug at first. For kniebund, stay true to size since the buttoned cuff allows minor adjustment. For lange, size up slightly for comfort. If your waist is one size and your hips another, order based on the larger measurement and have the waist adjusted by a leatherworker if needed — taking lederhosen in is far easier than letting them out.
Suspender and Length Considerations
Most lederhosen come with suspenders that can be adjusted in length. If you are tall (over 6’2″) or short (under 5’5″), confirm the suspender length range with your manufacturer before ordering. For kurze, the hem should fall 2-3 inches above your kneecap. For kniebund, the cuff should sit just below the kneecap. For lange, the hem should reach mid-ankle.
